How to Dress for Success as a Woman in a Male Dominated Office Environment

Working in an office as a woman doesn’t mean you have to dress like a man. While you may have a lot of men working in the office, dressing for success can be achieved easily. Unless you are in an industry that has harsh working conditions such as industrial settings, skirts, dresses and dress shoes are ideal for the office.

The one thing you should start with is to highlight one thing and accentuate it with just one outfit. For instance, if you’re wearing a skirt to the office try pairing it up with a conservative top. Also, if you’re wearing pants consider a top that is more fitted but not too tight. Here are a few other tips and items to consider pairing together.

Suits

If you’re going to wear a suit, consider a solid one rather than a printed one. This is more conservative and you can match it with a colorful top and a nice pair of shoes. Try to avoid wearing heels that are really high as this can be uncomfortable limiting you walking around or running errands.

This helps you stay comfortable while you work. You should also keep jewelry to a minimum which can also prevent how effective you are if you always have to adjust it. Consider sticking to a necklace, a pair of earrings, and a ring. Keep it tasteful to keep you looking professional. If you’re going to wear perfume, wear something light and wear it sparingly.

Dress the Part

Rather than dressing sexy, try to dress more conservative. This will ensure you are taken seriously in the workplace. Physical appearance can affect how people look at you and can have a huge impact on your confidence level. Some women find it difficult to dress for success and to have that powerful boost they need in an office full of men.

That’s why you should stick to grace rather than sex appeal. Avoid midriff tops, cleavage, and too much jewelry. You also need to avoid t-shirts, sandals, and jeans. These can give the impression you’re there to have fun rather than to work.

Dresses and tailored suits are your best avenue. However, when you’re looking for clothes, consider how they’ll fit on your body. Look for fabrics such as wool, pure mixes and cashmere. Buying cheap fabric results in cheap looking clothing. Consider pairing that jacket with a skirt that stops at or below the knee.

This gives a classic look that sets you up for success and being taken seriously in the workplace. Tailored dresses can be worn by themselves or paired with a fitted jacket.

Colors

Try choosing power colors. Navy, gray and black are great choices to stick with since they can be paired with just about any color. Darker colors have a tendency to show a serious side of you rather than bright and vibrant colors. These colors tend to signify a lack in confidence.

The workplace these days involves women trying to compete with men and if you want to be taken seriously you need to dress the part.
